Following an 11 month battle with cancer, Richard (Dick) Allen Clark, 76, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at his home in Freeport, Illinois. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. Richard Allen Clark was born on September 11, 1933 in Freeport, IL the son of Homer and Elizabeth (Hannah) Clark. Richard married Mavis (Earnest) on September 19, 1953 in Freeport at St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church. Richard was a Freeport High School 1951 graduate and attended Highland Community College. He later taught drafting classes at Highland. A Navy veteran, Richard served as a Radar man aboard the Destroyer Escort Albert T. Harris from 1951-1954. He was a Honeywell/Micro Switch employee, working in various Engineering related positions. While with Honeywell, he was on a team that developed a patent for them. He retired in 1993 after 38 years of employment.
Richard helped coach his nephew Doug Clark in baseball. He later coached his son Jeff and team from PeeWee up through Pony League. After that, Richard and son Jeff coached Jeff’s daughter in basketball at Orangeville grade school level. Family always came first and Richard also was active with his children in Indian Guides, Indian Princesses, and Boy Scouts. He golfed many years in the Micro Men’s league and St. John’s golf group, and as often as he could at Park Hills Golf Course with friends. He was a long time active member of St. John U.C.C. He was on the church board while at St. John was building their new church after a fire destroyed their church in 1957, spending many hours in various capacities over the years.
Richard was active in Freeport’s Veterans of Foreign Wars and Korean Veterans group. Richard spend eight years with countless hours in assisting with the development of the All Veterans Memorial Park turning a pile of dirt and weeds into the beautiful park it is today. He especially appreciated opportunities during his illness to drive out to the Veterans Memorial Park. He enjoyed teaching line and country dancing for seven years. Richard was an avid Bears and Cubs fan. He enjoyed woodworking, paint classes, and traveling. Richard was a dedicated Orangeville Broncos fan for their four talented grandchildren’s athletic and music events, rarely missing attending their events over a span of 25 years.
Survivors include his wife Mavis, daughter Diane (Rick) Kahly of Red Oak, Lisa (Dan) Monigold of Lanark and son Jeffrey (Bonnie) Clark of Freeport. Grandchildren- Lucas (Shannon) Bowers of Oswego, Lydia (Mike) Steinhauser, Emily Clark of Freeport and Brooke Kahly of Red Oak. Great Grandchildren – Grayce Clark and Michael Steinhauser of Freeport and Nevaeh Bowers of Oswego with another great grandchild due in a few weeks. Sisters-Eileen LaBorde, Monroe, Bette (Russ) Gell of Oviedo, FL and Doris (Ron) Stone of Rock Island. Brother-in-law Wm. H. Earnest (Fairy) Orange, CA and sister-in-law Doris Earnest of Port Orange, FL. Also many loved and special nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by: Richard’s parents, in-laws Harry and Anna Earnest, brothers Bill and Homer, Jr., sisters Mildred Meiers and Frances Witt and sister-in-law Donna Clark and brothers-in-law Jack LaBorde, Homer Meiers Sr., Roy Witt and Harold and Ken Earnest.
