Carroll E. Haijenga, 70, of Baileyville, died Tuesday at F.H. N. Memorial Hospital. He was born November 7, 1946 in Freeport, Illinois the son of Robert E. and Ruby (Hayenga) Haijenga. Carroll married Darla J. Voss on November 27, 1965 in Sterling, Illinois. Darla died April 14, 2003. He married Sherry Scheidegger on December 30, 2006 in Forreston. Carroll was a Polo High School Graduate Class of 1963; he also graduated from Bailey Technical Institute in St. Louis, MO Carroll was an agricultural man at heart. From growing up on a farm, to fixing Case IH tractors at Coffey's in Polo, to tending his own farm, and then later, to managing an agricultural business in Baileyville up until he retired. Carroll was a longtime volunteer firefighter with the Forreston Fire Department. Carroll was also known as "Big C" to many, especially to his trapshooting buddies. Carroll's favorite moments were driving his '63 Impala, watching his grandchildren's activities, drinking coffee with the morning crews at the Beltline Cafe and CPS, and making people laugh. But mostly, he loved sitting on his porch looking over his pond surrounded by his wife, family and the dogs. Mr. Haijenga is survived by his wife, Sherry of Baileyville; son, Brian Haijenga of Freeport; three daughters; Brenda (Joe) Akins of Forreston, Beth (Scott) Gordon of Bloomington and Barb (Shane) Wells of German Valley; two stepsons, Matthew Wisner of Freeport and Michael Wisner of Normal, Illinois; six grandchildren, Sarah (Dan) Clark, Adam (Rachel) Akins, Ella and Harrison Gordon, Julia and Andrew Wells; one great-grandson, Jonathon Clark; sister, Duska (Dave) Ruter; his father-in-law Charles Scheidegger; and his sister-in-law, Marian Haijenga. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his brother, Ivan. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Faith Lutheran Church, Forreston. Visitation will be Monday, 4:00- 7:00 P.M. at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, Forreston. Also from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at the church on Tuesday.
