Dorothy M. Ackerman

Dorothy M. Ackerman, 90, of Freeport, passed away January 21, 2016 at FHN Memorial Hospital. She was born September 1, 1925 in Freeport. She was the daughter of Clifford and Annette (Brookman) Cook. Dorothy married Lewis H. Ackerman on March 12, 1948 in Belvidere, Illinois. Lewis passed away January 10, 2011. Her various jobs throughout the years were teaching at the one room school house in Red Oak, the Chamber of Commerce in Freeport, head cook at Carl Sandburg School, head cashier at Freeport High School Cafeteria, and doing the bookkeeping for Ackerman Heating and Sheet Metal. Dorothy enjoyed bowling, playing bridge, golfing, and traveling. Dorothy and Louie were very active at FACC volunteering at the food pantry and other places in the community. She also enjoyed family time with children, grandchildren, and especially great-grandchildren. She is survived by her son Charles (Claire) Ackerman of Perrysburg, Ohio; daughter, Barb (Mike) O'Grady of Ridott, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Jon (Brooke) Ackerman and Ben Ackerman of Sterling, Virginia, Carmen Alkire of Bloomington, Indiana, Megan (Mike) Reading of Blanchardville, Wisconsin, Nichole (Chris) Bauscher of Freeport, Riley (Brandy) O'Grady of Lexington, Illinois, and Melissa (Victor Williams) O'Grady of Las Vegas, Nevada; seven great-grandchildren, Jayln Carr, MiYanni Smith, Hudson Bauscher, Devin O'Grady, Noah Hodge, Harper Bauscher, and Monroe Williams. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother Robert. The funeral will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday January 29, 2016, at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Keith Johnson officiating, with a visitation from 10:00 A.M until the time of service. There will also be a visitation from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Thursday January 28, 2016 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. Burial will be at a later date at Oakland Cemetery.
