He died at Barnes Jewish Hospital on May 31, 2017.He is survived by his wife, Barbara, sons Christopher and Nicholas and brothers, William and Richard. His parents and an infant brother predeceased him. He attended Freeport schools but his favorite and most influential experience while growing up was working with his father on the Illinois Central Railroad. He entered Northwestern University in 1961 where his lifelong interest in politics and history was kindled by a favorite professor, Dr. William M. McGovern. He attended medical school at the University of Illinois where he met his wife, Barbara, graduating in 1969 AOA. His residency in ophthalmology was at The Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, finishing in 1973. He received two additional degrees from the University of Illinois, an MBA and a J.D. and was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi. He practiced his medical specialty, initially in Florida and then in Decatur, Illinois. He especially enjoyed getting to know his patients as friends who shared many life lessons which he applied to his own life, to the benefit of many others. Jim's love of learning never ceased. His professional competence was recognized when he served as an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. His lifelong interest in politics resulted in his election as a delegate to the 2016 Republican National Convention. His love of history blended well with his gaining new insights into historical perspectives of the Old Testament as he enjoyed deepening his Christian faith through The Urbana Theological Seminary. He will be dearly missed and remembered for his infinite patience, honesty and integrity, insightful intellect, and wonderful stories, often based on extensive travels which he loved to plan. Memorials may be made to Audio Bibles for the Blind, PO Box 621, Bradenton, Fl 34206 USA or Urbana Theological Seminary, 314 East Daniel, Champaign, Illinois 61820.
