Celebrating the Life and Legacy of David Williams Sr.
January 26, 1940 – July 10, 2025
David Williams Sr. of Freeport, Illinois, born January 26, 1940, in Osceola, Arkansas, to Reverend O.T. Williams and Hallie Williams.
He was preceded in death by six siblings. He is survived by his wife Ardie Williams, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, friends, and a freezer probably still full of steaks, ribs, chicken and more.
David was a man who could string together curse words with an artistry that would make a sailor blush, and then turn around and feed a crowd with his barbecue, burgers and homemade sides. When cooking, and grilling ribs, he insisted there was only one way (His Way). He ran several BBQ joints in Freeport, most customers, who knew or had the chance to experience his grumpy façade knew the real David.
Though he wore his “grumpy old man” badge proudly, his family knew the truth: underneath that grumble was a generous heart (aka Big Teddy Bear). He helped anyone and everyone who needed it. He also donated to charities, and had a soft spot for lost treasures, filling his home with collectibles, each with a story, or at least a good bargain behind it.
David leaves behind a legacy of colorful language, cooking, and playing spades. He didn’t need to say much, his actions, food, and presence said it all.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday July 18, 2025 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, IL. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service. Entombment will be in Oakland Mausoleum.
In honor of David, hug your loved ones, fire up the grill, and say something wildly inappropriate, in remembrance of David.
