Eddie Lee Furdge was born on January 26, 1936 to the late Lou Berdia Fields and Eddie Lee Furdge Sr., and though life bought a change, God saw fit to bless him with another fatherly love through John O. Bell, who stepped in with a heart full of care, wisdom, and strength. John left a lasting imprint on Eddie's life and helped shaped the man he became.
Eddie confessed Christ at an early age and carried a deep love for God that never wavered.
At the age of 16, he moved to Freeport, Illinois, where he continued to grow in faith and purpose. He graduated from Freeport High School in 1956, a proud accomplishment that marked the beginning of many more milestones to come.
For 45 years, he served faithfully in the produce department at Piggly Wiggly, where his strong work ethic and friendly spirit made a lasting impact on coworkers and customers alike. He retired in January 2000 with deep respect from all who knew him.
On September 26, 1959, Eddie was united in holy matrimony to Elizabeth Bruce at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. Their union was blessed with 65 years of love, commitment, and unwavering companionship a bond that stood the test of time and reflected the very heart of God's design for marriage.
Eddie was a faithful member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as an usher with dedication and humility. He took great pride in greeting others with kindness and ensuring that God's house was always in order. His service was not just a duty, but a reflection of his love for the Lord and his church family.
Eddie peacefully departed this life on Sunday morning, April 13, 2025. Surrounded by love and covered in grace, he transitioned from labor to reward, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and quiet strength.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Bruce, who passed on December 18, 2020.
He leaves to mourn his devoted wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Furdge; one grandson: Nolan Furdge; two brothers: Larry Bell and Stephen Bell; one sister: Anna Bell; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
