Charles Edward Giles (Ed) of Freeport passed away peacefully, Sunday August 31, 2025. He was born March 26, 1931 in Freeport, IL to Charles and Louise (Silberman) Giles. On November 25, 1951 he married Florence J Hill. Florence passed July 26, 2024.
Ed began his working career in the tool room at Micro Switch (30 years) in 1950. He was promoted to technician and eventually Engineer when the Motors Division was moved to Rockford as Pacific Scientific (10 years). Ed retired in 1990. His carpentry and mechanical skills through his many years of work were passed along to kids and will continue to live on through them.
Ed and Florence enjoyed dancing in their younger years, and took lessons at the Mercury Ballroom with friends. They spent many family outings camping and enjoying the outdoors. Ed was a coach for their son's Little League baseball team for several years. After retirement, Ed enjoyed morning coffee with friends and spending time caring for his home and lawn. His family loved him very much and will miss him dearly.
Ed is survived by his children, Rick (Joyce) Giles of Freeport IL, Pam (Doug) Banks of Dakota IL and Bob Giles of Longmont CO, Five Grandchildren, Kristin, Andrea, Becky, Jason, and Wesley. Twelve Great Grandchildren and Two Great-Great-Grandchildren, and Five nieces.
Preceding him in death are his wife Florence, his sister Irene Jones and grandson Jason Giles.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on Monday, September 15. 2025 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded. A private family burial of cremated remains will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Ed’s memory.
