John Robert Fluegel, 79, of Freeport, IL passed away Thursday August 21, 2025 at FHN Memorial Hospital. He was born January 13, 1946 in Freeport, IL, the son of Harold and Marion (Adams) Fluegel. Following graduation from Freeport High School in 1963, he was married and served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home John worked on the family farm alongside his father, uncle Bob and grandfather Oliver. On March 15, 1975, he married Kay Wagner in Orangeville Il.
John was an avid Packers fan and enjoyed watching every game, but foremost, farming was John’s calling, and he took pride in being a 5th generation farmer.
John also took great pride in his antique Allis Chalmers tractor collection, and accumulated several rare tractors, including those he used during his years of farming. He was an active member of Riverbend Antique Tractor Pullers Club and enjoyed going to tractor pulls where he could watch his sons compete. He was known as Big John to many. Most of all John enjoyed having his family around.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Kay Fluegel of Freeport; six children, Tracey of MN, and her children Zella (Garner) Moe and Oliver; son Robert (Robin) of St. George, UT and their children Elizabeth (Kenny) Hutchings, Ashley, Jessica, Rebecca (Hyrum) Smith, Laura (Jake) Cendejas, Emma, Sara, Porter, and Clara; daughter Trisha (Blake) Nelson of Mona UT and their children Tanner (Sydnie), Ally (Ryan) Hatfield, Emily, Kylee (Truman) Crapo, Cooper, and Jackson; Christopher of Freeport Il and his daughter Alyssa; son Eric (Cynthia) of Orangeville, IL and their children Lyric, Tripp and step children Sage, Farrah, and Breezy; and son Tim of Freeport, IL, and his children Kaylynn, Alexia, and Oliver John; and 13 great grandchildren.
John is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Wendy and Elane, and grandson Jayden.
Funeral services will be 12:00 P.M. Friday August 29, 2025 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Cremation rites have been accorded following the service. Burial of cremated remains will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial has been established in John’s memory.
