Kent, IL

Laurie Jo Rafferty-Ranstead, age 59, of Kent, IL, went to be with the Lord on Novemebr 19, 2025.

She was born on Novemebr 22, 1965 in Rockford, IL, and adopted a few days later by Karl and Joan (Jacobs) Rafferty of Freeport, IL.  Laurie grew up in Freeport and graduated from Freeport High School (1983) and Highland Community College (2004) where she studied medical coding.

She worked at the FHN Cancer Center for many years and organized many Relay For Life rallies.  She also worked at Jewel Osco, Union Dairy, and was a secretary for Oakland Cemetery for many years.

Laurie married the love of her life Andrew Ranstead on April 15, 1989 in Clinton, IA.  She was a loving mother to her two children and opened her home to many other children in her community.

She was also a long time member of Park Hills Evengelical Free Church and Crossroads Community Church.  As well as being involved in her children's Boys and Girls Scout Troops and 4-H branch.

Laurie was known for her fiesty and fun personality.  You could hear her loud voice in any room and recognize her beautiful red hair.  She loved butterflies, roses, monkeys, cats, dogs, and Pepsi.  A beautiful and corageuos woman.

She is preceded in death by her father, Karl Rafferty (2023) and her mother, Joan (Jacobs) Rafferty (2001). Along with her grandparents, classmates, and friends.

Laurie is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Andrew.  Her two children Kaleb and Nicole Tscharner (Ranstead) (35) and Kiah Ranstead (33).  Her brother Michael and Diane Rafferty.  Her brothers-in-law Robert Ranstead, Brian and Jennifer Ranstead, and sister-in-law Linda and Scott Hixon.  Along with many nieces and nephews.

Laurie had become disabled in 2005 and her health was very poor.  She took a turn for the worst this year.  Ever the survivor, she fought until the very end.  She passed peacefully and without pain beside her husband and daughter at FHN Memorial Hospital on Wednesday.  A funeral service will not be held, as per her wishes.  She will be laid to rest at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Laurie will be greatly and dearly missed.  Her sudden passing has left an incredible hole in the heats of those who knew her.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the Humane Society or any local animal shelter.
