Leonard Claude Mechling

Leonard Claude Mechling, 82, of Freeport, passed away, Tuesday August 18, 2026, at Manor Court, with his loving family by his side. Leonard was born May 30, 1944, in Freeport, the son of Claude and Mildred (Straub) Mechling. He proudly served his country in the US Air Force from 1962-1966. Leonard married Doris “Tootie” Queckborner on May 31, 1964, in Chadwick, IL. Tootie passed away on December 21, 2021.

Leonard retired after working for Newell for 35 years. After retiring, he drove for the Bocker Auto Group. He volunteered for the Freeport Rural Fire Dept for many years. Leonard was a member of the Freeport Eagles Club #679. He enjoyed riding his Harley, fishing, hunting, and using his recumbent bike.

Survivors include his son, Scott (Brooke) Mechling of Lake Summerset; daughters, Tammy (Andy) Scudder of Freeport, and Kelly (Brian) Albrecht of Winnebago; also surviving are his beloved 7 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Leonard was preceded in death by both of his parents, wife, Doris “Tootie” Mechling, and brother, Lynn.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday August 22, 2026, at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. Visitation from 1:00 pm until the time of service. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial has been established in Leonard’s memory.
