Orville "Skeeter" Knodle

August 10, 1929 - June 14, 2026

Orville "Skeeter" Knodle, 96, of Freeport, illinois, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at FHN - Mercy Hospital.

Skeeter was born on August 10, 1929, in Freeport, Illinois, to Orville James Knodle and Vernie Mae (Carr) Knodle. He graduated from Freeport High School in 1947, where he met the love of his life, Joanne Mead. The couple was united in marriage on September 9, 1950, in Freeport and shared more than 75 years of love, devotion, and family.

Skeeter proudly served his country as a Supply Sergeant in the National Guard and during the Korean War. Following his military service, he was employed by Gunite, where he dedicated 21 years before retiring in 1995.

Family was the center of Skeeter's life. He enjoyed spending time with his loved ones, swimming, and taking family vacations. Nothing brought him greater joy than watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow and thrive. To many, he was simply known as "Grandpa," a title he cherished deeply.

Those who knew Skeeter also knew of his unwavering passion for the Green Bay Packers. He proudly "bled green and gold" and remained a devoted fan throughout his life. One of his fondest memories was meeting legendary Packers quarterback Bart Starr. As a longtime season ticket holder, Skeeter enthusiastically passed his love of the Packers on to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Skeeter's kindness, humor, and dedication to family, and steadfast love for those around him will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.

Skeeter is survived by his beloved wife, Joanne Knodle of Freeport; his children, Gregg (Kathy) Knodle of Freeport and Luann Stewart of Freeport; his grandchildren, Stacy (Dan) Fernstaedt, Laura (Breo) Pierce, Troy (Rachel) Stewart, and Kristi (Kevin) Walz; as well as many great-grandchildren whom he adored.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; seven sisters; his beloved brother-in-law, Richard Mead; and his son-in-law, Scott Stewart.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the hospice nurses for the compassionate care and support they provided.

A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 2026, at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow.
