The Incomparable Life of Ralph James Lenoir Sr.
Ralph James Lenoir Sr., 88, of Freeport, Illinois, peacefully entered his eternal home on Monday, July 6, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on October 31, 1937, Ralph was the son of Sarah (Williams) Lenoir and Abraham Lenoir Sr. He was one of seven children, raised in a close-knit family where faith, hard work, perseverance, and love shaped the man he would become.
Ralph graduated from Freeport High School in 1956 and, soon after, answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. From 1956 to 1960, he proudly served with honor, traveling the world and gaining experiences that strengthened his character and deepened his lifelong commitment to service.
On November 11, 1961, Ralph married the love of his life, Nellie Jean Shipp. Together they built a marriage rooted in faith, unconditional love, and unwavering devotion. Their union was blessed with two children, Ralph James Lenoir Jr. and Cynthia Lenoir Fleming, creating a legacy that continues through generations.
A firm believer in the value of education, Ralph earned his Associate's Degree from Highland Community College in May of 1979 before receiving his Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Cardinal Stritch University in 1991. He devoted 25 years of service to Micro Switch, followed by 10 years at Atwood Mobile Products. Never one to stop serving others, Ralph later spent another 10 years as a beloved substitute teacher at Freeport High School, where he positively impacted the lives of countless students.
Ralph faithfully served both his community and his church. He was a member of the City of Freeport Liquor Commission and served First Church of God in many capacities, including usher, Praise Team member, Church Trustee, and maintenance volunteer. He believed no act of service was too small and quietly gave of himself wherever he was needed.
Outside of his many accomplishments, Ralph was the life of the party and the heart of every gathering. He never met a stranger and had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcomed, valued, and like they were on top of the world. His infectious smile could light up any room, and his quick wit and playful sense of humor had family and friends laughing until tears streamed down their faces. He loved traveling with his beloved wife and family, admired beautiful automobiles, and treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren Raven Lenoir and Benjamin Fleming. Above all, Ralph was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, faithful brother, trusted friend, and a man whose kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Those who will forever cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 64 years, Nellie Jean Lenoir; his daughter, Cynthia (Lawrence) Fleming; his cherished grandchildren, Raven Lenoir and Benjamin Fleming; his brother, Alvin Lenoir; his sister, Vicki Kendrick; his sister-in-law, Patricia (Albert) Lenoir; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, cherished friends, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Ralph James Lenoir Jr.; his parents, Sarah Williams Lenoir and Abraham Lenoir Sr.; his brothers, Albert Lenoir and Abraham Lenoir Jr.; his sisters, Minette Burks and Rose Taylor; and his sister-in-law, Betty Williams.
Like a tree planted by streams of water, Ralph remained steadfast through every season, deeply rooted in Christ, unwavering in character, and fruitful in service. His life was a blessing to all who knew him, and the seeds of faith, love, joy, and kindness that he planted will continue to bear fruit for generations to come.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday July 11, 2026 at First Church of God (484 S. Ottawa Freeport, IL). Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church. Entombment will be in Oakland Mausoleum.
