Ruth C. Elgin, 94, went home to be with her Lord on May 5, 2026. She was born on October 17, 1931 in Freeport, Illinois to Claude and Clara Nunemacher.
She married Robert R. Elgin on March 25, 1951. Together they farmed and raised their family. They were active in Zion Church and later in Park Hills Church. Ruth also worked as a cook at Freeport High School and as a CNA at St. Joseph nursing home in Freeport. She loved to garden and cook. Many enjoyed her delicious meals. Her family was very important to her. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She liked going to their school events and games. She also enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears, Bulls, and Cubs. Cardinals were her favorite birds. They brought her joy watching them outside her window. She enjoyed sitting in her chair with her cat on her lap. Ruth was a woman of great faith. She was a beautiful example of kindness and love to all who know her.
She is survived by two sons-Kenneth (Terry) Elgin of Orangeville, IL and Andrew (Somer) Elgin of Freeport,IL. Also a daughter in law Wendy Elgin of Willow Park, TX , a sister in law Betty Simler of Freeport, IL and a brother Robert Nunemacher of Normal, IL. She has six grandchildren-Jason (Andrea) Elgin of Monroe, WI, Timothy (Darci) Elgin of Orangeville, IL, Christopher (Nikki) Elgin of Minot, ND, Rebecca (Chris)Thiel of Forreston, IL, Matthew (Holly) Elgin of Aledo, TX and James (Krista) Elgin of Wautoma, WI. She is also survived by 17 great grandchildren and 2 great-great- grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, son James, son Daniel, four brothers, a sister, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday May 12, 2026 at Park Hills Evangelical Church in Freeport, IL. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Freeport, IL. A memorial has been established in her memory.
