Wanda Fay
Ishmon
May 15, 1962 – March 25, 2026
Wanda Fay Ishmon (Brooks), age 63, passed away peacefully in her home in Freeport, Illinois, surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 10:38 a.m.
Wanda was born on May 15, 1962, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Wesley and Virgie Brooks (Ward). She built a life rooted in love, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family and community.
She shared 31 beautiful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Pastor Leon Ishmon III, after joining their lives in 1992. Together, they raised three beautiful children: Tevin Brooks Sr., Leon (Jocelyn) Ishmon IV, and London Ishmon.
Wanda leaves behind a legacy of love through her cherished children and grandchildren: granddaughters Tashae Harris, Taleah Nolan, Nahla Evans, and Kylee Danielowski; and grandsons Tevin Brooks Jr. and Tristan Brooks.
She also leaves to cherish her precious memories her siblings: Dwayne, Darrell (Debbie), Otha (Minnie) Brooks, Winona Euell, Vanessa (Robert) Brown, Darlene Brooks, and Isabell Parks, all of Freeport, IL; Jessie (Helen) Brooks of Augusta, GA; and Archie Mae of Hammond, IN; special son, C’Katavion “Tae” Pempilton; godchildren, Tymeka Carter, Lydia Leggett, Keisha Lemon, Adrienne Fleming and Iyana Jackson; best friend, Patricia Shaw; special friends Tammy Pearson and Tamara Washington; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Clara Bualice, Elizabeth (Janice), Vanetia Brooks, Celestine Shipp, James Henry, James Wesley, John Wesley, Robert, and Stanley; her best friend, Jessie Wallace; and her precious angel granddaughter, Azaylah Ishmon.
Wanda was a kind, strong, selfless, and God-fearing woman whose presence could light up any room. She carried herself with grace and strength, naturally commanding respect and leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met. She had a special gift for breathing life into others, whether through her encouraging words, her nurturing spirit, or the meals she lovingly prepared. Wanda found joy in feeding people, hosting gatherings, and creating a space where everyone felt welcomed and loved. Her home was a place of joy and togetherness, often filled with family and friends gathered for her well-loved barbecues.
A devoted caregiver for over 30 years, Wanda dedicated her life to serving others, including her time working with TriState Home Health and Liberty Village. Her compassion and selflessness were evident in all she did.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She spent many years at New Jerusalem COGIC, where she faithfully served her church family. She co-founded Unleashed Ministries in 2016 with her husband, where they served the lost through biblical principles. In 2024, she stepped into her role as First Lady of Bethany United Church of Christ, continuing her mission of ministry alongside her husband.
Wanda was deeply committed to her faith and her community. She led youth, poured into the lives of others, sang in praise and worship, and taught Sunday school with passion and purpose. She lived by her favorite scripture, Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Her life was a reflection of her dedication to spreading the Gospel and uplifting those around her.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a homegoing ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Bethany United Church of Christ, 2341 W. Stephenson Street, Freeport, Illinois 61032. A repass will follow in the fellowship hall.
Wanda Fay Ishmon (Brooks) will be deeply missed, but her love, faith, and legacy will live on in all who were blessed to know her.
